This post is part of our June series on start-ups. We reached out to some of our favorite local start-uppers to find out how they're innovative. This post is by Harvey Simmons. Harvey is Dean of Marketing Affairs at EverTrue, a TechStars and MassChallenge startup that is dedicated to providing school fundraisers better data by connecting traditional alumni CRMS to the social graph. Harvey is a proud Boston College Alum, and is wild about running, college basketball and everything mobile. You can reach Harvey at @HOSimmons4 or at harvey at evertrue.com.
When on the spot to articulate a quick response, we sometimes find an obvious truth. That was the experience I had when answering the question of "what is it like to work at a start-up in Boston," by a current student while visiting my alma mater, Boston College.
The quick response? "Motivating"
The tight-knit community of start-uppers in Boston is highly motivated by what they do. Whether it is runners who relish in hitting the asphalt like RaceMenu, or an imaginative bunch who delights in challenging the way we look at gaming like the The Tab Lab, startups in The Beantown aim to disrupt the spaces that their teams care the most about.
EverTrue is without exception. Visit our workspace at MassChallenge, and you'll quickly see the alumni swag from our client schools overflowing across our desks. Grab a bite with a member of our team, and you're bound to hear the stories of their alma mater, or about one of our recent reunion crashes of a client school.
Yet, what is remarkable about this motivation is not merely its prevalence, but in how it continuously leads to insightful ideation and earnest execution. Whether it takes place during a concentrated Hack Week, or a broader reaching month long push for our whole squad, there is something particularly satisfying about a good night's sleep well earned, and the creation of a new meaningful alumni connection because of something we collectively did along the way.
EverTrue was co-founded in 2010 by Brent Grinna, a proud Brown University and Harvard Business School alumnus, who was frustrated by the tools he was provided as an alumni volunteer. Fast forward two years later, and some time spent with great accelerator programs such as TechStars and MassChallenge, and today our crew of over 13 faithful alums includes a retro DJ, a robot master, a Kinnect guru, a college football captain, a brewmaster, a marathon runner and the world's best bow tie collection.
In short, EverTrue provides school fundraisers better data by connecting traditional alumni CRMs to the social graph, with a specific focus on LinkedIn. EverTrue is "mobile-first", but available across mobile, tablet and web interfaces. We are excited to be working with leading institutions in 17 States, ranging from Phillips Andover Academy in Andover, MA to The Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, CA, and Ivy League institutions including Brown University and Cornell University.
